Top tips for surfers

on how you make a positive climate difference

"Surfing is not just a sport. Surfing is about experiencing natural places and forces at their best and their worst." Surfrider Foundation Australia

At Go Neutral we have partnered with Surfrider Foundation Australia to help support them in their mission to inspire an engaged surfing and coastal community who are passionate about protecting our delicate planet for generations to come.

Surfrider Foundation Australia is a passionate and registered not for profit sea-roots organisation dedicated to the protection of Australia’s waves and beaches through conservation, activism, research and education. And just as Surfrider Foundation’s focus is on the sea, our focus at Go Neutral is on our land. The projects we support look at the planet holistically, taking into account land and ocean impacts from human activity.

Human agricultural activity in coastal regions and near waterways impacts the ocean every single day due to land erosion and chemical water run-off. We proudly support projects which rehabilitate land and reduce these environmental impacts. For example, sitting on ancient land within Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef catchment area, our Catchment Conservation Alliance project is regenerating 2,300 hectares of native forest on land that’s historically been cleared for pasture. These days Eucalypt and Acacia trees are flourishing, providing shade for cattle and a thriving habitat for native wildlife including bearded dragons, blue-tongue lizards, galahs and wallabies. What’s more, by improving water retention on the land and reducing top-soil runoff, this project also directly improves water quality flowing to the Great Barrier Reef.

The Surfrider Foundation and Go Neutral partnership exists to encourage Australians to be proactive in caring for our land and oceans, by educating and helping people to implement simple changes to their lives that help improve the environment. The projects we support not only regenerate our land and restore native forests, they also capture carbon emissions from the atmosphere that would otherwise be contributing to climate change.

Carbon emissions are one of the leading causes of climate change, and reducing your carbon footprint is an important action that individuals, businesses and countries need to take to help slow the effects of climate change. As humans, there are many areas of our lives that result in carbon emissions being released into the atmosphere. This can include direct emissions from driving your car, or indirect emissions from production and shipping of the food you consume and the items that you purchase. As a result, no matter how hard we try, we may not be able to completely eliminate our carbon footprint. Offsetting the part of your footprint that you are unable to reduce is an action that each of us can take, that makes a real impact and helps slow down the warming of the earth.

Top tips for surfers to make a positive climate difference

  1. Help (or create!) campaigns that promote large-scale emission reductions.
  2. Reduce your use of fossil fuels. Consider whether or not you need to drive and fly. Electrify your home, and as much as possible, switch to alternative transport modes.
  3. Choose to buy 100% renewable electricity or go solar. Look for ways to increase efficiency in your home and appliances.
  4. Look for businesses that do the right thing for the environment and choose to use their products or services. One of the most impactful activities you can do is to switch your bank or superannuation provider.
  5. Talk about it! You can multiply your impact by spreading the word and encouraging others to take responsibility for their environmental footprint.
  6. Offset what you cannot avoid while you work on reductions. Even better, offset more than you use.
