GO POSITIVE
Going neutral is just the beginning. You can choose to do even more. The more emissions you offset, the more you're doing to take responsibility for your contribution to climate change.
Unless you just started driving, your car has created emissions in previous years, too. You can choose to buy extra offsets to pay off your carbon debt.
How far will you go?
GO FOR BALANCE
Would you like to make sure that you’re really going neutral? To work out your car’s yearly emissions, you need to know a couple of things:
Fuel economy: how much fuel does your car use? This is measured in litres per 100km (L/100km). A small, efficient car might use 4 or 5 L/100km. A large, heavy, or inefficient car might use 15. Most cars can tell you their fuel economy, or you can look up the official numbers in the Green Vehicle Guide. Remember: official fuel economy numbers are often very different (and lower) than your real fuel economy.
Annual mileage: How far did your car travel in the last year? Unless you’re really good at keeping notes, you’ll probably settle for an estimate. Your car’s age and odometer can help you work this out. Otherwise, you can use your daily or weekly mileage to make an estimate:
Daily kms | Weekly kms | Yearly kms |
---|---|---|
14 | 100 | 5000 |
28 | 200 | 10000 |
55 | 400 | 20000 |
80 | 550 | 40000 |
150 | 1000 | 50000 |
Once you’ve got your fuel economy and your mileage, you can use our calculator.
